Will the Fathers Please Take a Stand?

15 Jun Will the Fathers Please Take a Stand?

The job of a father, among other things, is to protect his children.

Never has this job been more important than it is right now, when the United States government is ripping children from the arms of their parents.

Sometimes ICE (appropriately named for its cold cruelty) takes the parents away while the kids are at school, and the children have no idea what happened or if they will ever see their parents again.

Sometimes they tell the parents they are giving the kids a bath and the children never return.

Some are ripping still-nursing babies away from their mothers, traumatizing them for life.

This is not an America that stands for family values. It is not an America I want to be a part of.

Nearly 11,000 children are now in the custody of the US Department of InJustice. They are held in 100 shelters, spanning 14 states. Over 1500 of them are crammed into a converted Walmart store in Texas, which reporters have only recently been able to enter, days after Senator Jeff Merkley D-OR (who was denied entry) said it looked like a dog kennel.

This is not a partisan issue, it is a moral issue taking place in a country rapidly hurtling over the cliff of moral bankruptcy.

Father’s Day is coming up. What better time for all you men to take to the streets and proclaim your outrage against this inhumane practice in the name of our country.

We implore you to do something, anything, to stop this.

Us Mothers would organize it, but we’re too busy working two jobs and raising the kids largely by ourselves. But we’ll make the signs and watch the kids while you march.

It’s still largely a man’s world. So please men, take a stand for something better than this. Show us what you mean by family values, will you guys?

Here’s some more info about what you can do:

  1. Call Congress. Find out who represents you in Washington, and let them know you want the practice of family separation to end. Ask them to support bills that will help reunited children already taken from their parents and also prohibit future removals. Those include the Senate’s HELP Separated Children Act and Keep Families Together Act. The American Civil Liberties Union offers a script for calling the Senate, though we suspect most callers will be able to find the right words themselves.
  2. Make sure you’re registered to vote and get yourself to the polls this November.
