16 Aug Stand for What is Right
“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”
Proverbs
Last night I had the good fortune to attend a small fundraising event for Presidential candidate, Marianne Williamson. I arrived at the lovely home in the Castro district of San Francisco, early enough to have some amazing conversations with people, including Marianne herself.
Despite a full day of interviews and appearances, she was attentive, open, listening, and bright, and at all times very real, as she truly engaged with the people gathered, listening intently to their ideas and questions.
In our conversation we spoke about many things, and I shared my concept of moving from the love of power to the power of love, as a new organizing principle for society, which she mirrors in her book, A Politics of Love, which I highly recommend. I also spoke to her about establishing a Matriot Act, a bill that would address the devastation of our Mother Earth as a fundamental threat to national and global security, requiring a huge focus of energy, funds, and attention. She lit up at the idea, and even mentioned it later in the Q & A session.
I had a front row seat in the small living room, among about 50 people, and got to witness Marianne up close and personal, all five feet of her petite form, packed with intelligence, power, and vulnerability. It wasn’t the kind of audience she had to sell, so it became an enlivened Q & A about the issues that matter, which you can read more about here.
She spoke of the climate crisis and how the majority of the population is now grasping its urgency, while the corporate profiteers are hindering its solutions.
She spoke passionately about the need to care for our democracy, which is now on life support, due to a generation of apathy, and how we are bound to lose what we don’t care for, whether it’s our health, our relationship, or our democracy.
She spoke of the dehumanization of “other” and the heartbreaking view of toddlers on their cell phones, missing out on the important brain function of connecting with real people. She shared her dream of American women inspiring others around the globe.
She continually spoke to the deeper and higher levels of each question, whether it was the politics of left and right, Donald Trump, healthcare, or the establishment of a Department of Peace, a no-brainer if there ever was one.
Every word was like a breath of fresh air, uplifting and inspiring. The people there were also inspiring: writers and researchers, political figures and activists, all working for a world we know in our hearts is possible.
For at least one evening, it seemed it that there really was evidence of a bright new growth under the gloom and doom of the 24-hour news cycle.
Marianne has the ability to speak in a way that cuts through the downward spiral of American politics. She has the ability to wake us up to the truth of who we are and a vision of who we can be.
Whether or not you see Marianne Williamson as a viable candidate for President isn’t even the point. We need to get potent voices like hers as far and wide into the airways as we can, for it is these ideas that germinate the possibility of a better world, and inspire the will of the people to evolve into what’s next.
Today she is within reach of inclusion in the 3rd Democratic debate, but it isn’t certain. There needs to be a few thousand more unique donations (they can be as small as a dollar), and to reach 2% in at least four polls. If there are any polls you can participate in, please cast your vote.
The world is collapsing from an absence of vision. There are so many things that are wrong, things we can and should stand up against. But what is even more important is to stand for what is right, to describe something better, and to realize that democracy, like love, needs to be a verb more than a noun.
And that requires all of our participation in supporting the ideas we believe in — until they become reality.
Action without vision is a nightmare. Vision without action is a daydream.
This is a call to action in support of a grand vision of our evolutionary possibility.
There is no time to waste.

Posted at 12:56h, 17 AugustThank you for your vivid account of the evening with Marianne Williamson. Please know that her vision is supported by others across the world even if we are not permitted to contribute to her presidential candidacy. (I did donate but had the donation returned as I am not a US citizen or resident in the USA.)
Much encouragement from Freiburg im Breisgau, Germany.

Posted at 14:21h, 17 AugustGreat post! Hopefully Marianne knows about the United States Institute of Peace funded by Congress. While not a. Cabinet-level Department of Peace, I imagine this Institute does work similar to the Department she envisions.

Posted at 19:46h, 18 AugustThanks for all you do, Anodea. Just made a small contribution to Marianne’s campaign. If Obama won, there is hope for Marianne. Been watching a rerun of Sr Joan Chittister on Super Soul re her book “ the Time is Now””…” she is on the same wave as Marianne. Caroline Myss new talks are also about how we are in a time of transition and how we have lost our moral compass. Would be great for all four of you to have a round table discussion on a major tv network on what needs to be done ASAP to turn things to better!
