09 Nov A Grand Step Toward the Future
I’ve always seen initiation as a test. Which do you choose, Door A or Door B? The voices egging you on do not always tell the truth, and the signs on the doors might even be scrambled. How do you know? Who do you trust? The difference can mean life or death.
Ultimately, it is a test of values. We are the ones being tested as to whether we are worthy to continue the evolutionary experiment, or be added to the dust heap of extinction. Are we a blessing or a curse?
Well, it seems America chose the right door this time, the door that opens to the future, not the past. It was a nail biter, but at least I can stop holding my breath and uncork the emotional wave that’s been stopped up for the last four years. Like a bad dream, those years seemed very real at the time, but now we are collectively awakening to a new dawn. Now we can begin moving forward again.
Not that it’s going to be easy. Initially I was depressed that so many people would vote for four more years of the most immoral and unqualified president in US history. But I am heartened by the fact that millions more opted for something better: a world of decency, kindness, cooperation, and truth. Hallelujiah!
Humanity’s rite of passage from the love of power to the power of love just moved another big notch forward. But we’re not by any means through the initiation just because we passed this test. For initiation is just the start. Now the real work begins, the work of embodying these values in our lives, putting them in place in our country, and creating a civilization around them.
The ground is fertile now. Little actions can have big consequences. The seeds we plant will determine our harvest later. I, for one, plant love, generosity, caring, and beauty. Whatever else happens, that’s the kind of world I want to live in.
In the old myths it was believed that “as it is with the king, so it goes with the land.” When the king is corrupt, the land fails and there is pestilence, droughts, fires, hunger, division, and enmity. A benevolent king changes the underlying fabric of the kingdom, but it takes time to heal the wounds all the way down.
Biden rightfully spoke that we need a season of healing. We must heal the divides that separate people from planet, rich from poor, white from black, men from women, and Republican from Democrat. We are, inevitably one nation and one planet, with a common ground and a common future based on our actions together.
And together is the only way we can harvest this glorious future that is calling us forward.
