Light is Returning!

05 Jan Light is Returning!

As the new year grinds its way out of the darkness of midwinter, I know we all hope 2022 will be better than last year.

Given the incredible trials that 2021 brought us: an unending pandemic, unprecedented attacks on democracy, and a general lowering of the bar in how we treat each other, that shouldn’t be difficult.

But really, what happens in the future is up to all of us, and our ability to work together toward a world we can love. Are you worried that can happen?

Albert Einstein said, “Worry is a waste of imagination.”

So let’s use our imagination to ask what we want to create together? What kind of world will support our growth, awakening, happiness, and collective well-being? Because if we are not actively creating something, things will follow the path of least resistance, and fall short of what they could be.

These are the questions that I ponder as I face into the new year.  Like so many people I talk to, I also feel overwhelmed about what issues to address, what voices to read or listen to, and how to proceed in this time of uncertainty.

In fact, I haven’t even written a blog in a long time ostensibly for those reasons. However, I also have to admit that I had become increasingly discouraged and even intimidated by the hate mail I got last year for expressing my opinion in these blogs. And when I read the news, I see a lot of that going around.

Somehow, we’ve reached a point in the enlightened age of 2022 that it has become socially acceptable to levy death threats to someone simply because they hold a difference of opinion.

Now I’m not here to argue who is right in their beliefs, because the very act of being sure you are right is part of the problem. But I do want to call us all to a higher level of behavior. What kind of world does your action create?  Is that the kind of world you want to live in?

But even more, what is underneath all that hostility? Why is it emerging now, at a time when we should be much more grown up than that, a time when our cooperation is so desperately needed to solve the problems that face us as a planet and a civilization.

As the pandemic brought us shut downs and restrictions, people were pushed into isolation. While it may have been necessary to offset a pandemic, it wasn’t psychologically healthy.

Unlike any previous pandemic in history, this one was coupled with the blessing and curse of technology. We had the blessing of connecting online, with a reach that expanded beyond our geographical locations. And we could also burrow into our silos of digital information, becoming addicted to the dopamine rewards of Facebook likes, or sensationalist news that has to become ever more outrageous to garner attention. We stumbled into the danger of misinformation, but we also missed the danger of addiction to that information, heightened by our isolation.

So let this new year be a time of coming together again, a time of new respect and civility, a time of appreciation for what is precious. And I will continue to write my blogs no matter what!

My offerings this year will be on where we are at this incredible moment of peril and possibility, how we can co-create together, and how we can work on ourselves become better human beings.

To this end, see the upcoming events listed below. My first in-person workshop will be at Kripalu in April (yay!) and the rest is online.
